Why Earthxway: Transparent, Tech-Tracked Tree Planting
Meera paid for ten saplings in a plantation drive two monsoons ago. A thank-you email arrived the next week with a photo of smiling volunteers holding spades. It was a good feeling.
Last month, a colleague asked her a simple question over chai: "So where are your trees now?"
Meera didn't know. She didn't know the village, the species, or whether any of them had survived their first summer. The photo could have been from any field in India.
If you have ever donated to a plantation drive, you have probably had a moment like Meera's. This post is about that moment: why it happens so often, and how Earthxway Foundation set out to become a transparent tree plantation NGO in India, where every tree you fund is one you can actually find.
Key takeaways
- Many plantation programmes can't show where a tree was planted or whether it survived. That trust gap is the biggest problem in tree planting.
- Earthxway logs every sapling with GPS coordinates, species, date, site and field team at planting time. This is geo-tagged tree plantation done properly.
- Dated photo updates, honest survival reporting and documented replacements follow each tree over time.
- Local communities and women's self-help groups look after saplings under a three-year maintenance commitment.
- Individuals can gift a tree online. Companies get a live dashboard and quarterly impact reports.
- You can verify your tree yourself in three steps (see below).
Why Trust Is the Biggest Problem in Tree Planting Today
For decades, tree plantation ran on trust alone. You wrote a cheque, got a thank-you letter and a stock photograph, and hoped for the best. The development sector quietly calls this "black box" charity: money goes in, a report comes out, and everything in between is invisible.
If you're unsure about this kind of reporting, you aren't being cynical. You've seen the pattern before.
The four places plantation programmes usually fail
- No location record. Saplings are planted "somewhere in the district", so nobody can independently check them.
- No survival data. A Day 1 photo tells you nothing about Year 3, when most sapling mortality actually happens.
- No maintenance accountability. Watering, protection and replacement are rarely documented.
- Totals instead of evidence. Donors get a big round number ("10,000 trees planted") rather than proof they can check.
Why this matters even more for companies
For CSR teams, an unverifiable plantation is more than an uncomfortable feeling. It's a reporting risk. Boards, auditors and ESG raters increasingly ask for evidence-grade environmental data, not narrative summaries. A plantation you can't verify is a plantation you can't confidently report.
So the real question isn't "which NGO plants the most trees?" It's "which NGO can show me my trees?"
What Makes a Transparent Tree Plantation NGO in India?
If you're searching for the best tree plantation NGO or a trusted NGO in India, look past the logos and the big numbers. Ask for proof you can check. A transparent plantation partner should be able to answer five questions clearly:
- Where exactly is my tree? (GPS location, not just a district name)
- What was planted, and when? (species and plantation date)
- Is it still alive? (survival tracking over the years, including failures)
- Who is looking after it? (a named maintenance plan, not "nature will take care of it")
- Who verifies the bigger claims? (especially for carbon)
Here is how Earthxway answers each of them.
How Earthxway Tracks Every Sapling: Geo-Tagged Tree Plantation Explained
Our position is ambitious but simple:
"A donor should be able to point to a specific tree, on a map, and see how it is doing."
That's the standard we hold ourselves to. Here's how it works in practice.
Step one: GPS geo-tagging at the pit stage
Each sapling is logged with GPS coordinates at the moment it is planted. The record captures the species, plantation date, site name and the field team responsible. From then on, your tree is a data point on a map, not a line in a summary report.
Step two: Photos over time, not one launch-day picture
Field teams, along with periodic drone passes, photograph plantation zones as they grow. Growth milestones are added to each record. Over time you can watch the same patch of land move from bare pits to an establishing canopy. Your tree's story becomes visual, dated and cumulative.
Step three: Dashboards instead of once-a-year PDFs
Through our web dashboard, Adopt-a-Tree sponsors can see their trees on a live map, browse photo updates and download digital adoption certificates. For corporate partners, the same data rolls up into site-level views for internal reviews and stakeholder communication.
Step four: Reporting the bad news too
Transparency has to include failures. In real field conditions some saplings always die. When that happens, the record shows it, and the replacement planting is documented rather than hidden.
"We would rather under-claim and be believed."
We'll publish verified sapling survival data, with the date and method of measurement, after the first full year of monitoring at our sites.
Native Species, Real Sites, Real Care
Technology is only half of it, and we say so openly:
"Technology documents the work — it does not replace it."
Native species chosen after an honest site survey
We plant native and fruit-bearing species that suit the local ecology, restore biodiversity, prevent soil erosion and store carbon. We don't use template plans. Final species selection, plantation model and site plan are always decided after a joint site survey with the landholder or partner.
A three-year maintenance commitment
Most sapling deaths happen in the first few years, so planting day is where our work starts, not where it ends. Every plantation is backed by a disciplined field team, community caretakers and a three-year maintenance commitment. Local community members and women's self-help groups are trained to look after the saplings.
"A tracked dead tree is still a dead tree."
Villagers plant and protect; technology proves and reports
Communities give the care, and the data gives you the proof.
Typical Plantation Donation vs. Earthxway's Tracked Approach
The "typical" side below describes common gaps across the sector, not any particular organisation.
Location of your tree
- Typical donation: A district or region name
- Earthxway: GPS coordinates logged at planting
Planting record
- Typical donation: A total in a report
- Earthxway: Species, date, site and field team per sapling
Proof of planting
- Typical donation: One group photo on the day
- Earthxway: Dated photo updates over time, plus periodic drone passes
Survival information
- Typical donation: Rarely shared
- Earthxway: Survival tracked; failures shown and replacements documented
Aftercare
- Typical donation: Often unclear
- Earthxway: Three-year maintenance commitment with trained community caretakers
Species choice
- Typical donation: Whatever saplings are available
- Earthxway: Native and fruit-bearing species, decided after a joint site survey
Where you see it
- Typical donation: A once-a-year PDF
- Earthxway: Donor dashboard and live map
Carbon claims
- Typical donation: Sometimes self-estimated
- Earthxway: Never self-certified; certified credits go through independent standards such as Verra and Gold Standard
Real Stories from Our Plantation Sites in Maharashtra
Earthxway Foundation is a young non-profit based in Maharashtra, with our head office in Nagpur and a branch office in Wagholi, Pune. Here are three local stories that show what this looks like on the ground.
100 native saplings at Silver Spring Apartment, Wagholi
At Silver Spring Apartment in Wagholi, Pune, residents and their children came together for a community plantation drive. Over 100 native saplings were planted. Earthxway provided the saplings and plantation kits, and residents gave their time for site preparation, planting and ongoing care.
The value isn't only the green cover. As we've written about our plantation drives:
"Trees are the easy part. What's harder, and far more valuable, is what grows around them."
Read more in the human story of plantation and how a single tree can change a society.
A Green School at Vishnuji Shekuji Satav High School, Pune
Our first completed Green School transformation is at Vishnuji Shekuji Satav High School in Pune. Students personally adopt geo-tagged saplings and track them through a web portal. They also compost the school's organic waste, run student-led Eco Clubs, and take part in drawing, quiz, science fair and writing competitions.
That one completed campus is now our template as we plan to expand to 40+ schools in Gondia district. Our Green Minds School Challenge 2026 in Gondia builds on this with creative competitions and plantation activities inside school campuses. Learn how Green School Certification transforms campuses.
An eco-pond brought back to life in Wagholi
Trees need water, and so do the ecosystems around them. At our Wagholi, Pune site we have completed an eco-pond with native aquatic plants such as lotus. It supports frogs, turtles and the small ecosystems that show a water body is healthy again. It's a working demonstration that our water plans aren't just diagrams in a proposal. See how we pair traditional wisdom with IoT in water conservation.
Our homepage impact counter currently shows 55,732+ trees planted (as of October 2026). Our work today runs across sites in and around Pune, Nagpur and Gondia district, and every site is listed on our projects page.
You can browse every ongoing, completed and upcoming initiative on our projects page, which lists reforestation, farming and water projects across India.
How to Verify Your Tree in 3 Steps
Transparency only counts if you can check it yourself. Whether you gifted a tree or sponsored a hundred, here's how.
Step 1: Keep your certificate and planting ID. Every gifted tree comes with a personalised digital certificate that carries a unique planting ID. It's emailed to you, and to your recipient if you add their email.
Step 2: Find your tree on the map. Sign in to your donor dashboard on earthxway.org to see your tree's location on a live map. You can also explore the wider Earthxway Impact Map of projects and donor plantations and filter it by reforestation, water conservation, agriculture and more.
Step 3: Follow its growth, and ask questions. Browse the dated photo updates and growth milestones on your record. Read our impact reports and transparency documents, including the Annual Impact Report 2025. If anything is unclear, write to info@earthxway.org. Questions about who verifies what are always welcome.
Gift a Tree Online in India: A Present That Keeps Growing
Flowers wilt and gadgets age. A gifted tree does the opposite: it grows more valuable every year. That's why more people now gift a tree online in India for birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, weddings, memorials and corporate gifting.
Gifting through Earthxway's Adopt-a-Tree programme takes three steps:
- Choose your trees. Pick a tree pack or enter a custom number.
- Personalise it. Add the recipient's details and a message of up to 500 characters, and choose a certificate style (Minimal Eco, Nature Photo or Premium Elegant).
- We plant. Our team plants native species at restoration sites and sends you photo updates.
You can send the certificate right away or schedule it for the birthday or anniversary date.

Looking for a CSR Tree Plantation Partner? Here's What You Get
If you're choosing a CSR tree plantation partner, the question that matters is whether your sustainability team can defend the data in front of a board or auditor.
Evidence your ESG team can use
Every Earthxway corporate partner gets a live dashboard and quarterly impact reports. The reports include tree survival rates, geo-tagged plantation data, carbon sequestration estimates, photo documentation and community benefit summaries, ready for ESG disclosures and annual sustainability reports. Site-level data also makes it easy to map contributions to UN SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Programmes built for companies
- Tree plantation programmes on degraded landscapes, using native trees
- Corporate and employee tree gifting with custom branded certificates
- Bulk tree sponsorship for milestones, launches or annual pledges
- Employee volunteering drives, where staff can later open a dashboard and find "their" trees
- Agroforestry and carbon sequestration projects with tribal and rural farmers
- Urban micro-forests of 500–1,000 sq. ft. for school grounds, campuses and industrial plots. These can include a solar-powered sensor bench showing real-time air quality and temperature
A straight answer on carbon
Earthxway Foundation does not verify carbon credits itself. Where a project pursues certified credits, that runs through independent standards such as Verra (VCS) and the Gold Standard. We will never claim carbon outcomes that haven't been independently verified, and we encourage every company to ask that question of any partner. Read more in our guide to agroforestry and carbon credits and the corporate tree planting CSR & ESG compliance guide.
A note for CSR teams: Earthxway was incorporated in 2025, and CSR implementing agencies generally need a three-year track record, so we're building toward CSR eligibility and don't yet act as a CSR implementing agency. Today, companies can partner with us through employee volunteering drives and tree gifting, which is not counted as CSR spend. Please check with your CA or CSR advisor before budgeting. We'll share partner stories here as they happen, always with our partners' permission.
